Field Study Abroad: Industry in Asia Asia Field Study, BUS 477/677 (6 Credits) Application Deadline: February 23, 2007 International Student Exchange Presentation (Including Asia Field Study) February 2, 2007 5:00pm - 6:00pm CBA A301 DOWNLOAD: 2007 Asia Field Study Application 2007 Preliminary Course Syllabus 2006 Asia Field Study Program Completion Report (Detailed) 2006 Asia Field Study Program Completion Summary Overview This annual, 6-week course provides an unusual opportunity for in-depth analysis and firsthand observation of the real world of Asian business. Taken to assembly lines and executive boardrooms of companies and briefed by experts in three countries under the guidance of an experienced professor, participants will bridge the gap between academic theory and the dynamic reality of modern business practices in Seoul , Beijing , and Ho Chi Minh City . Prior to departure for Asia, the participant will receive an orientation on the cultural, social, economic, and political environments of the companies and industries to be studied during May and June at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) campus. After the field study in Asia , there will be a wrap-up session and research period at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus. Topics to be discussed: * strengths and weaknesses of Asia 's current economy with particular emphasis on financial and industrial reforms * relationship between the US dollar and Asian currencies * transformation of Asian cultures and values due to globalization effect * likely impact on competitve economic advantages and disadvantages among Asian countries by the strengthening of China 's economy in the global market [2006 Asia Field Study Group at VASC TV Studio (A Vietnam State Owned Enterprise Software and Communications] Course Overview
Course Agenda Seven (7) 3-Hours sessions at the UH CBA Facilities between 21May and 6July (exact days and times to be posted in late January), supported with videos and course materials posted on WebCT. Week 1 (May 21) Travel Orientation, Asia Country Background, Foundational Theory. Week 2 (May 28) Japan country background. Week 3 (June 4) South Korea country background. Week 4 (June 11) China , Hong Kong , Macau and Taiwan country background. Week 5 (June 18) Southeast Asia and Vietnam country background. Week 6 (June 25) Cases and Analysis by Country and Industry. Week 7 (July 2) Cases and Analysis by Country and Industry. Week 8-9 (July 7-22) Asia Field Study site visits in Seoul , Beijing , and Vietnam . Week 10 (July 23) Assessment with country, industry and company reports. Week 11 (July 30) Final paper presentations and summary. Week 12 (August 6) Recap and review. Summer Session I begins on May 21 and ends on June 29. Summer Session II begins on July 2 and ends on August 10. [Tsukiji Fish Market, the largest wholesale fish market in the world] Cities and Goals The following is a listing of cities planned for the 2007 Asia Field Study. The onsite learning goals are to provide diversity in the types of firms (stage of development, industry, ownership, financial disclosure, regulatory environment, competitive environment, level of globalization, management style, target market segment and procurement/distribution system) and ability to compare and contrast firms along the learning frameworks. Seoul , South Korea (4 Days). The goal in Seoul is to experience the spectrum from SMEs to large conglomerates (Chaebols) in a recently-developed economy, examine issues of competitiveness in South Korea 's vibrant economy, and expansion of Korean businesses throughout Asia . Beijing , China (4 Days). The goal in Beijing is to experience rapidly growing firms in a rapidly developing economy, issues of procurement, logistics, government control in the form of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and China 's rapidly growing middle class. Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam (4 Days). The goal in Ho Chi Minh City is to experience the transition of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to publicly held and private firms.
