The year was 2004 and the biggest merger between a US firm and China
firm was about
to unfold. It made the headlines of the presses worldwide and prompted
a multi-agency
review, led by the U.S. Treasury Department. The most critical part of
the deal was not
the purchase price, rather the forward looking sustainability of the
merged company,
which depended on retaining IBM talent and the IBM brand name. In 2005,
the deal
was done, IBM’s PC Division was now owned by Lenovo, and Janet Ang was
built into
the finalized contract.
Fast forward to 2007 and Lenovo is the largest PC manufacturer in China
and the third largest in the world.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics is quickly approaching and Lenovo is positioning
itself to leverage its exclusive
sponsorship deal with the Olympic Games, sacrificing its IBM brand name
in lieu of hoisting the Lenovo
brand in front of the worldwide stage.
Janet Ang will provide her insights into the IBM Lenovo merger, discuss
Lenovo’s marketing and sales
opportunities and challenges in Greater China (PRC, Taiwan and Hong Kong)
and globally, explain why
Lenovo prematurely dropped the IBM brand name, and preview Lenovo’s marketing
plan for the 2008 Beijing
Olympics.
Janet Ang leads the operations of Lenovo's Global Desktop business
worldwide, expanding upon her post-acquisition role of heading the
marketing and sales for the ThinkPad notebook and ThinkCentre desktop
business across Greater China. She is responsible for the operations
that
deliver an integrated desktop portfolio leveraging the brand name of
THINK from the IBM PCD heritage and the strength of Lenovo's 30%+
market share in the desktop market in China. Janet leads the team that
drive new product introductions from concept to end of life, and is
responsible for the daily operations that supports marketing, sales and
delivery of quality product to Lenovo's customers worldwide.
Before the move to Lenovo, Janet had worked with IBM for 23 years at
various
senior level positions across Asia Pacific before moving to Beijing to
head up
the Personal Systems Group for IBM Greater China. Janet served as VP
of
Singapore InfoComm Technology Federation and Singapore Computer Society.
Janet also served as board member of SingPost and the Singapore Tourism
Board. She is a senior member of the Singapore Computer Society, member
of
the International Women's Forum (Singapore Chapter). Janet also serves
on the
Advisory Council of the National University of Singapore Business School
and
the Infant Jesus Schools Board of Management, both of which are her alma
mater.
